Morse Code Mastery: Signaling with Your MAGLight

The SOS Signal

One of the most critical messages to know is SOS. It’s universally recognized as a distress signal and can save your life in emergencies. SOS in Morse code is:

Learning Objectives

  • Master the SOS signal.
  • Learn other key emergency signals (HELP, NEED ASSISTANCE, etc.).

Activity: Practice SOS with Your MAGLight

  • Exercise: Turn off all other lights, and practice signaling SOS (• • • – – – • • •) repeatedly using your MAGLight. Time the dots and dashes to be consistent.
    • Tip: Use 1-second intervals for dots and 3-second intervals for dashes to ensure clarity.

Practical Scenarios

  • Scenario 1: You’re lost in the wilderness at night and see a search-and-rescue helicopter in the distance. Signal SOSwith your MAGLight towards the aircraft.
  • Scenario 2: You’re stranded on a mountainside with limited visibility. Use your MAGLight to signal NEED HELP in Morse code toward a distant campfire you spot.
