Foraging: Finding Edible Plants in the Wild

Module 4: Avoiding Toxic Plants and Other Dangers

Foraging can be dangerous if you don’t know how to avoid toxic plants. This module will teach you how to recognize harmful species, how to use the universal edibility test safely, and other important tips for staying safe while foraging.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how to recognize common toxic plants in your region.
  • Understand the universal edibility test for plant safety.
  • Gain knowledge about other dangers while foraging, such as poison ivy or wildlife.

Activity: Toxic Plant Identification

Exercise: Research and create a list of at least three toxic plants in your region. Go for a nature walk and try to identify these plants in the wild. Take photos (without touching!) and document their features for easy identification in the future.
